We are thrilled to announce that Wezizwe Foundation has been officially approved as a Public Benefit Organisation (PBO) by the South African Revenue Service (SARS) and has been granted Section 18A status. All qualifying donations to the Foundation are now fully tax deductible.
This is a significant milestone for our organisation. It is a testament to the commitment, integrity and purpose that drives everything we do. And it is a direct result of the trust and support that you have placed in us from the very beginning.
“This approval is not just a certificate. It is the formal recognition that Wezizwe Foundation is doing what it said it would do — with integrity, accountability and love.”— Liziwe Mosley, Founder
What Does PBO Approval Mean?
A Public Benefit Organisation (PBO) is an organisation that has been formally approved by SARS to operate in the public interest. PBO status is not automatically granted to all registered NPOs, it requires a rigorous application process that demonstrates the organisation is operating exclusively for public benefit, in a transparent and accountable manner.
For Wezizwe Foundation, PBO approval means:
- We are officially recognised by SARS as an organisation that exists for the benefit of the public, not for the private gain of any individual.
- We are held to the highest standards of financial transparency and accountability, including annual reporting obligations to SARS.
- We are formally structured to receive donations, grants and corporate CSI contributions in a legally compliant framework.
What Does Section 18A Approval Mean for You?
Section 18A of the Income Tax Act is the provision that allows donors to claim a tax deduction on donations made to approved PBOs. In simple terms: when you donate to Wezizwe Foundation, you can claim that donation as a tax deduction when you submit your annual tax return to SARS.
Here is what this means in practice:
- Every qualifying donation to Wezizwe Foundation is fully tax deductible.
- We will issue an official Section 18A receipt to every qualifying donor within 5 working days of receiving their donation.
- For corporate donors, contributions to Wezizwe Foundation also qualify for B-BBEE Socio-Economic Development (SED) recognition.
- Both individual and corporate donors can request their Section 18A receipt by emailing admin@wezizwefoundation.org after making their donation.
If you have donated to Wezizwe Foundation in the past and would like a Section 18A receipt for your records, please contact us at admin@wezizwefoundation.org and we will assist you.
Why This Milestone Matters
Wezizwe Foundation was established in August 2024. In less than a year, we have received full PBO approval, Section 18A status and NPO registration while simultaneously delivering active programmes to vulnerable families, children’s homes and ECD centres across South Africa.
This pace of formal recognition is not common for a young organisation. It reflects the seriousness with which we have approached every aspect of our governance and our programme delivery from day one.
For our donors and partners, this milestone is proof that your trust has been well placed. For those who have been considering supporting Wezizwe Foundation but have been waiting until we were formally recognised - the time is now.
“We refused to wait until we were big before we were credible. We built credibility first — because the communities we serve deserve nothing less.”
What Happens Next
PBO and Section 18A approval mark the end of one chapter and the beginning of another. With our formal credentials in place, we are now actively pursuing corporate CSI partnerships, foundation grants and individual donor programmes at a scale that was not possible before this approval.
Our programmes - food parcels, educational support, ECD centre revamps, winter warmth drives and the Beyond Matric bursary initiative continue to run and grow. And with every new partner and donor who joins our community, we are able to reach further, help more and build deeper.
There is so much more to come. And we cannot wait to share it with you.

Thank You
None of this happened by accident. It happened because of a community of people who believed in Ubuntu, in the idea that we rise by lifting others, that no one is truly free until we are all free and that the work of building a better South Africa belongs to all of us.
Wezizwe Foundation exists because of you. And we will continue to exist, to grow, to reach further and to deliver on the promise we made to the communities that raised us.
